A simple crossover
Doom is a famous 1993 first-person shooter game developed by id Software. You play as a hardened space marine who battle against a horde of invading demons in order to save Earth. The game became highly popular, spawning several sequels and pretty much helped define the FPS genre. It inspired numerous similar games with their own series, such as Half-Life, Quake, Duke Nukem, and Halo.
Meanwhile, Bionicle Heroes is a 2006 3D third-person shooter video game by Traveller's Tales. It features the 2006 feature characters of Bionicle, one of Lego’s successful line of construction toys that tells the story of the Toa—heroic biomechanical beings with innate elemental abilities. In the game, you must switch between the collected Toa masks in order to take on their appearances and powers. Their weapons are all unique to their assigned elements, making them amazing items to have.
With the Bionicle Heroes: Doom Edition mod, these collectibles are added into Doom—8 new weapons whose sprites were created by rendering the original 3D models. There’s even a bit of the lore for this crossover: the Earth invasion failed so the demons are now trying to attack the world of Mata Nui. Instead of Doomguy, you play as the Maskless Toa who must find different masks to fight them back.
Only for the power
While Bionicle Heroes: Doom Edition mod isn’t a total conversion mod that fully changes Doom’s setting, the integration of cool Bionicle weapons and masks makes the gameplay a nice treat for fans of both series. It’s only too bad that there aren’t any specialized maps for this mod or a full-on environment change to match the crossover. At the very least, some of the enemies have been converted into their Bionicle counterparts for more immersion.
